Description
The Albuquerque Rail Yards complex in the Barelas neighborhood is among my most cherished places. For the last few years the city has been putting the circa-1917 blacksmith shop to use with a Sunday Rail Yards Market. However, most of the rail yard's 27.3 acres remain empty, the ethereal silver-tinged light still flooding the massive structures as it has for nearly a century. Shown here is the biggest building, the machine shop, constructed in 1921 and encompassing 3.8 acres. It's considered comparable to the 1922 Ford Motor Company Glass Plant, which scholar Grant Hildebrand said was "the single factory which carried industrial architecture forward more than any other."
