Description
I was taking photos early one morning at the base of he famous Pont del Diable, or Devil's Bridge, a part of Roman Aqueduct outside of Tarragona Spain. It was a foggy mystical magical morning. I thought I was the only person for miles around. But then I saw heads bobbing along the top of the aqueduct! Could one actually walk up there? It took only a few minutes to climb up the hillside to find out and here was the view fading off into the misty morning! So I walked across and back just so I could say that I did. This section is only a fragment of a much larger conduit used historically to supply water to the city of Tarragona Spain. Built in the 1st century BCE, the Pont del Diable brought water to the Tarragona from 15 miles away. The portion constituting what is today also called the Les Ferreres aqueduct is 217 metres long and nearly 2 metres wide, reaching a maximum height of 27 metres. The upper tier is comprised of 25 arches, and the lower tier of 11, each with a span of 5.90 metres. Besides a link to the Roman Empire, the aqueduct was used into the 18th century to bring water to Tarragona, showing the perfection of Roman architecture. The bridge is located 4 kilometers north of the city and it is part of the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco (listed as a UNESCO's World Heritage Site since 2000).

Wonderful perspective, Joan -- I enter the image in the front, and am drawn to keep walking to the very end!
